Wrought-Iron Wall Bracket (17th century)

A 17th-century wrought-iron wall bracket with scrolls and a hook, about 12 inches tall, of the type used to hang lanterns or signs.

Design characteristics

Scrolled iron brackets were a common part of Alpine and Central European houses, used for lanterns, signs and pots. This one shows the classic scroll vocabulary in a compact form. Brackets like this often accompany Alpine woodwork, and their scrolls can be echoed in carved wood brackets for shelves, range hoods and mantels.
