Renaissance Stube from Thierburg Castle, Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum

A 16th-century paneled room from Thierburg in Tyrol, displayed at the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum in Innsbruck, with richly carved and inlaid wall paneling and coffered ceiling.

Design characteristics

Wealthier Tyrolean houses and castles had more elaborate Stuben, with Renaissance paneling, inlay and carved ceilings. The Thierburg room shows that higher style: paneling divided into arched fields with inlaid decoration, and a ceiling made of moulded coffers. It is a good model for a formal mountain-home library or dining room where a plain board Stube would be too rustic.
