16th-Century Stube from the Courthouse in Niederdorf, Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum

A 16th-century paneled Stube from the courthouse in Niederdorf in South Tyrol's Puster Valley, now displayed at the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum in Innsbruck.

Design characteristics

The Stube is the heart of the traditional Tyrolean house: a heated, wood-lined room used for eating, working and gathering. This example from a courthouse in Niederdorf has walls of wide boards with simple mouldings, a beamed or boarded ceiling and built-in benches along the walls. Its plainness is part of its appeal. Board paneling like this is easy to produce and gives a mountain home immediate warmth, especially in a dining nook or den.
