Carved Walnut Chest with Arcaded Front (17th century)

A 17th-century walnut chest with an arcaded front of carved arches and moulded panels, about five feet wide.

Design characteristics

Storage chests were the most important furniture in early Alpine and Central European houses. This walnut chest uses an arcade of small arches across its front, a motif borrowed from architecture. Arcaded fronts are a handsome option for a window seat, a storage bench or a set of cabinet doors in a mountain home, and the arches can be machined as applied mouldings.
