Stube Bench from the Johannser-Hof near Villanders (c. 1500), Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum

A built-in Stube bench and paneling from the Johannser-Hof farmhouse near Villanders in South Tyrol, dating to around 1500, displayed at the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum in Innsbruck.

Design characteristics

Built-in benches running along the walls of the Stube were a standard Tyrolean feature, usually meeting in a corner behind the dining table. This one, around 500 years old, is part of a wall of wood paneling with a simple, sturdy profile. The corner bench and table is still one of the best layouts for a casual dining nook, and it fits easily into a kitchen or breakfast room.
