Painted Wooden Door Dated 1907, Innsbruck

A green-painted house door on Innsbruck's Höhenstraße, dated 1907, with a wrought-iron grille, painted edelweiss and pointed oval panels.

Design characteristics

This house door on the Höhenstraße in Innsbruck carries its date, 1907, painted across the lock rail. The upper half is glazed behind a scrolled wrought-iron grille set with initials and a painted spray of edelweiss, the Alpine flower that became a popular emblem of the region; the lower half has two pointed oval panels, each centered on a rosette. The chalked inscription at the top, a house blessing with the year and the letters C+M+B, is written over doorways each January at Epiphany in Catholic parts of the Alps. The door shows how the Alpine vocabulary of painted wood and decorative iron continued into the twentieth century.
