Painted Star-Pattern Door, Gasthof Tiroler Weinhaus, Achenkirch

An inn door in Achenkirch, Tyrol, painted with an eight-pointed star of radiating green and white bands under an arched fanlight.

Design characteristics

The entrance to the Gasthof Tiroler Weinhaus in Achenkirch is a boarded door whose whole face is given over to a painted pattern: an eight-pointed star at the center, surrounded by bands of green and white that radiate out to the frame. Above it, a segmental fanlight with glazing bars lights the entry. Painted geometric doors of this kind appear on a number of inns, barns and houses in Tyrol; the design is laid out in paint on plain boards rather than built from panels, which makes it an economical way to give a simple door a strong presence.
