Ledged and Braced Plank Door, Val di Peio
A plain mountain door of vertical boards stiffened by ledges and diagonal braces, with a wooden sliding bolt, near Cogolo di Peio in Trentino.
Design characteristics
Photographed on a mountain building above Cogolo di Peio in the Stelvio National Park, this door shows the most basic Alpine construction: vertical boards held by horizontal ledges, with diagonal braces between them to stop the door from sagging on its hinges. A wooden sliding bolt runs across the middle, and black iron strap hinges carry the weight. The same ledged-and-braced construction underlies many of the painted doors of the region; here it is left as bare timber.
