Chevron-Painted Door, Itter Castle

A pointed-arch door at Itter Castle in Tyrol, its boards painted in bold red and white chevrons and hung on long iron strap hinges.

Design characteristics

This exterior door at Schloss Itter, a castle in Tyrol, fills a pointed stone arch with a boarded leaf painted in broad red and white chevrons. Long iron strap hinges with decorative ends run across the stripes, and a small grilled opening is set into the boards. Painted chevrons and stripes appear on a number of castle, barn and gate doors in Tyrol; the paint makes the door legible from a distance and protects the boards, while the construction underneath stays as simple as a plank door.
