Arched Plank Door in the 14th-Century Pifing Stube
A heavy plank door with a round-headed frame and iron fittings, in one of the oldest farmhouse Stuben preserved in South Tyrol.
Design characteristics
This door belongs to the Stube from the Pifing farm, a room recorded as dating from the 14th century and now rebuilt at the South Tyrolean Folklore Museum in Dietenheim. It is made of thick vertical boards held together on the back, with a round-headed frame applied to the face and iron fittings nailed through. Centuries of smoke and handling have darkened the wood. Doors like this were built by the same carpenters who lined the room, which is why the door reads as part of the wall rather than as a separate piece of joinery. Detail cropped from a photograph of the full room.
