Suspended Fireplace Hood, Many Glacier Hotel Lobby, Glacier National Park

The lobby of Many Glacier Hotel in Glacier National Park, Montana, seen from above, with a freestanding fireplace and a suspended metal hood at the center of the room.

Design characteristics

Many Glacier Hotel, opened in 1915, was built in a Swiss chalet style for the Great Northern Railway. Its lobby centers on an open fireplace with a large conical hood suspended above it. The hood is the room's focal point, a sculptural object rather than a hidden flue. That idea, a statement hood treated as architecture, is directly relevant to kitchen design today, especially for an island range in a mountain home.
