Kitchen at Townend Farmhouse, Troutbeck, Cumbria

The kitchen at Townend, a 17th-century farmhouse in Troutbeck in the Lake District, lined with dark carved oak cupboards and built-in furniture made by the Browne family.

Design characteristics

Townend, now cared for by the National Trust, was home to the Browne family for more than 400 years, and its rooms are filled with carved oak furniture, much of it built in. In the kitchen, a long carved cupboard runs below open shelves, with more built-in storage nearby. The oak has darkened to near black. Townend is one of the best places to see vernacular English joinery in place, and its carved built-ins show how a farmhouse kitchen could be decorated without losing its practical character.
