Pine Kitchen Dresser, Clitheroe Castle Museum

A pine kitchen dresser displayed at Clitheroe Castle Museum in Lancashire, England, with open plate shelves above a base of drawers and panelled cupboards.

Design characteristics

The pine dresser is the defining piece of the English country kitchen. This example has two open shelves with plate rails above a work surface, two drawers and four panelled cupboard doors below. It is practical and unpretentious, and the exposed pine has mellowed to a warm honey color. A built-in version is one of the most requested pieces for a farmhouse-style kitchen, and it fits naturally on a single wall or beside a range.
