Kitchen Fireplace at Townend Farmhouse, Troutbeck

The kitchen fireplace at Townend farmhouse in the Lake District, a wide hearth set into dark painted woodwork with a fire burning in a cast-iron range.

Design characteristics

This fireplace is set into a wall of dark-painted timber, with a wide opening and a simple beam above, and furniture placed around it. It is the classic English country hearth. Today, the same proportions are often used to frame a cooking range: a wide alcove with a strong beam or mantel shelf above, creating a focal point for the kitchen.
