Design characteristics
This photograph, now in the Library of Congress, records a working kitchen of the 19th century: a wide hearth with hanging pots and utensils, a tall open hutch lined with plates, and simple wooden furniture on a stone floor. The arrangement is the same one found in English farmhouses and cottages, which is why it is grouped with them here. A plate hutch beside a hearth-like range alcove remains the core of a country kitchen.
