Apprentice-Made Oak Welsh Dresser

An oak Welsh dresser made by an apprentice cabinetmaker, with a tall plate rack and boarded back above a base of drawers and cupboards with shaped aprons.

Design characteristics

Welsh dressers combine a base of drawers and cupboards with a tall rack of open shelves for displaying plates. This apprentice piece shows the traditional details: a boarded back, a moulded cornice, shaped aprons and well-proportioned drawers. Dressers were often made as test pieces by apprentices because they demand accurate joinery across many parts. A Welsh dresser makes a beautiful built-in at the end of a kitchen run or in a dining room.
