Stickley Fireplace and Built-in Seat with Frieze (1909)

A plate from Craftsman Homes showing a cottage fireplace with a built-in seat beside it and a decorative frieze running above the woodwork.

Design characteristics

Small houses benefited most from built-ins, and this cottage design uses them well: a deep seat fits beside the fireplace, the wainscot continues around the room, and a painted or stenciled frieze runs above. It is a compact, cozy arrangement that suits a den or small living room. The seat can include drawers or a lift-up lid for storage.
