Stickley Tiled Chimneypiece with Copper Hood (1909)

A plate from Craftsman Homes showing a dining room corner with a tiled chimneypiece topped by a hammered copper hood, beside built-in cupboards.

Design characteristics

Stickley often hooded his fireplaces with copper, and the same form is now one of the most popular range-hood shapes. Here a tapering metal hood rises from a tiled fireplace surround, framed by the square posts and panels of the room's woodwork, with built-in cupboards next to it. For a kitchen, the same proportions work over a range: a tapered hood, plain tile around the cooktop and cabinetry that steps neatly around it.
