Lobby of El Tovar Hotel, Grand Canyon (historic photograph)
A historic photograph of the lobby of El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon's South Rim, opened in 1905, with a beamed ceiling, rustic furniture and patterned rugs.
Design characteristics
El Tovar was built by the Santa Fe Railway in 1905 as a grand hotel at the canyon's edge, combining log construction with refined interiors. This historic view shows its lobby with a coffered, beamed ceiling, wicker and wood furniture, and wood-paneled walls. The beamed ceiling is the standout feature, a pattern of timber beams that can be reproduced with box beams in a modern house.
