Painted Ledged Door with Stained Glass, Red House
A boarded door at Red House, William Morris's home by Philip Webb, painted with zigzag bands and set with four small stained-glass lights.
Design characteristics
Red House in Bexleyheath was designed by Philip Webb for William Morris and completed in 1860, and it is often described as a starting point for the Arts & Crafts house. This door shows why. It is a plain boarded door under a pointed timber frame, hung on iron strap hinges with a simple box lock, but its surface is painted in dark green with vertical zigzag and chevron bands, and four small stained-glass panels are set into the boards at eye level. Nothing is disguised: the boards, hinges and lock remain visible, and decoration is added by hand rather than by applied molding.
