Kitchen in the Brick Dwelling, Hancock Shaker Village

The food preparation room in the 1830 Brick Dwelling at Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts, with built-in cupboards and drawers, wide work tables and abundant daylight.

Design characteristics

The Brick Dwelling at Hancock housed nearly 100 Shakers, and its kitchens were designed for cooking at scale. Built-in cupboards and drawers line the walls, work tables fill the room and large windows bring in light. Everything is within reach and easy to clean. It is a strong model for a contemporary kitchen built around storage walls and a large central work table instead of uninterrupted upper cabinets.
