Shaker Blanket Chest with Drawer (1835–75)

A painted Shaker blanket chest with a lift lid over a single drawer, finished in a soft blue-green paint.

Design characteristics

Shaker blanket chests combine a lidded well for bedding with a drawer below for smaller items. This one is painted in a muted blue-green, one of the colors the Shakers used for furniture, and stands on a simple cut-out base. It is a good model for a window seat, an end-of-bed bench or mudroom storage: a lift-up lid with a drawer underneath gives two kinds of storage in one compact unit.
