Shaker Built-In Corner Cupboard and Drawers (Index of American Design, c. 1938)

A watercolor rendering by John W. Kelleher for the Index of American Design of a narrow Shaker built-in cupboard with drawers, fitted into a room corner below a peg rail.

Design characteristics

This drawing shows how the Shakers fitted storage into every available space: a tall, narrow cupboard with panelled doors above a pair of drawers, built into a corner with the room's peg rail and baseboard running around it. It is a useful idea for small rooms, closets and bathrooms where a narrow built-in can hold a surprising amount.
