Shaker Built-In Closet Beside a Stove (Index of American Design, c. 1938)

A watercolor rendering by John W. Kelleher of a Shaker built-in closet beside a cast-iron stove, with tall panelled doors and a peg rail on the wall.

Design characteristics

In this Shaker room, a tall built-in closet fills the corner next to the stove, with the peg rail continuing around the walls and the baseboard wrapping the closet. The closet's narrow panelled doors and simple trim make it disappear into the room. It is a useful precedent for a built-in pantry or coat closet that needs to fit tightly into an existing space.
