Room Interior at Canterbury Shaker Village (photographed 2017)

A room at Canterbury Shaker Village in New Hampshire, photographed by Carol M. Highsmith, with a continuous peg rail, built-in cupboard, plank floors and simple furniture.

Design characteristics

This workroom shows a peg rail running around the walls at head height, carrying garments, with a stove, sewing table and chair arranged below. The woodwork is painted and the floor is bare wood. Rooms like this show how the Shakers kept surfaces clear by hanging things up, which is exactly what makes the peg rail so useful in a modern mudroom, laundry or closet.
