Meeting House Interior, Canterbury Shaker Village

The interior of the Meeting House at Canterbury Shaker Village in New Hampshire, with painted woodwork, built-in cupboards, peg rails and simple wooden benches.

Design characteristics

Shaker meeting houses were left open for worship that involved dance and movement, so furniture was kept to the edges. This view shows painted woodwork, a built-in cupboard, peg rail and plain benches under a beamed ceiling. The painted trim in a soft blue is characteristic. For a modern interior, it shows how colored trim and a peg rail can define a space with almost no furniture.
