Hector Guimard Double Door from the Coutolleau Shop, Angers (1897)
A carved double door designed by Hector Guimard in 1897 for the Coutolleau shop in Angers, now at the Musée d'Orsay, with whiplash curves framing glazed panels.
Design characteristics
Hector Guimard, best known for the Paris Métro entrances, designed every detail of his commissions. This shop door shows his signature style: carved wooden frames that flow into the glazing bars, so the structure itself becomes ornament. The lower panels are solid, with the curves continuing across them. A door like this is a masterclass in how to make glazing bars, rails and panels part of a single drawing, and the idea can be adapted to French doors or a glazed cabinet.
