Central Salon with Glazed Partitions, Hôtel Solvay, Brussels
The central salon of the Hôtel Solvay in Brussels, designed by Victor Horta, with mahogany woodwork and glazed partitions and doors that open the room to light.
Design characteristics
The Hôtel Solvay is one of Horta's grandest town houses, with interiors designed down to the door handles. In the central salon, mahogany framing holds large glazed panels and doors, so rooms flow into each other while remaining distinct. The frames curve gently at their junctions. Glazed internal partitions like these are increasingly popular again, and an Art Nouveau version in stained wood is a distinctive alternative to modern steel-framed glass.
