Carved Door Designs with Swans and Irises, from Verneuil's L'Animal dans la Décoration (1897)
A color plate from Maurice Pillard Verneuil's 1897 pattern book L'Animal dans la Décoration, showing designs for carved wood with parrots and an eagle, and a carved door with swans and irises.
Design characteristics
Pattern books spread the Art Nouveau style across Europe and America. Verneuil, a student of Eugène Grasset, published plates showing how animals and plants could be stylized into decoration for furniture, textiles and architecture. This plate includes a carved wooden door with swans among irises, arranged in a vertical composition that fills the panels. It is a direct, usable design source for a carved interior door or a pair of cabinet doors.
