Lobby details in the Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, photographed by Carol M. Highsmith, showing stepped Art Deco trim and wall finishes.

Design characteristics

This view captures the stepped profiles and layered trim that define Art Deco interiors. Door and wall openings are framed by mouldings that step back in several planes, a shape borrowed from the skyscrapers of the period. Stepped casings are one of the simplest ways to give a room Deco character, and they can be produced as standard trim profiles.
