Arched Hall with Peg Rail, Centre Family Dwelling, Pleasant Hill

An arched hallway in the Centre Family Dwelling at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, with white plaster walls, a continuous wood peg rail and a simple bench under the window.

Design characteristics

The Shaker community at Pleasant Hill was one of the largest in the West, and its restored stone dwelling shows the order and light of Shaker interiors. A single dark-stained peg rail runs along the white walls at head height, carrying chairs and coats, while a plain bench sits beneath a tall window. It is a complete and very adaptable mudroom concept: one continuous peg rail, a bench and nothing else on the walls.
