Wall Paneling & Wainscoting · Tudor & Tudor Revival
The Long Gallery, Haddon Hall, Derbyshire (photographed c. 1890)
A photograph from about 1890 of the Long Gallery at Haddon Hall, an Elizabethan room lined with oak paneling, pilasters and tall windows.
Design characteristics
Long galleries were a feature of great Elizabethan houses, used for exercise and displaying portraits. Haddon Hall's gallery is lined with oak paneling divided by pilasters, under a decorated ceiling, with a wall of windows letting in light. The repetition of panel bays is what gives the room its calm. For a long hallway or library today, the same rhythm of pilaster-framed bays creates a strong architectural effect.
