Ornamented Interior Doorknob, Molly Brown House, Denver

A decorated interior doorknob and rosette in the Molly Brown House Museum in Denver, typical of the cast, patterned hardware used in high-style houses of the 1880s.

Design characteristics

Late-Victorian houses used decorative cast hardware throughout, with matching knobs, rosettes and escutcheons on each door. Details like this set the scale for everything around them: a richly patterned knob looks right against a substantial casing and a paneled door. Hardware is included in the library because it is the first thing to plan when a period door or cabinet is designed. New doors and cabinet fronts can be machined to accept salvaged or reproduction hardware.
