Lobby Door Detail, William R. Cotter Federal Building, Hartford, Connecticut

A lobby door detail in the William R. Cotter Federal Building in Hartford, Connecticut, an Art Deco building of the early 1930s, photographed by Carol M. Highsmith.

Design characteristics

The Cotter Federal Building is one of New England's finest Art Deco interiors. This door detail shows fluting, metal trim and a strong frame, all hallmarks of the style. Fluting, the parallel vertical grooves borrowed from classical columns, was a favorite Deco detail and is easy to produce on a CNC for door panels, cabinet fronts and pilasters.
