Copper Range Hood in the Glessner House Kitchen, Chicago (1887)

The restored kitchen of H. H. Richardson's Glessner House in Chicago, completed in 1887, with a large copper hood over a cast-iron range set into a white-tiled alcove.

Design characteristics

Long before range hoods became a design feature, Victorian kitchens used large copper hoods to carry smoke and heat from coal ranges into the chimney. The Glessner House kitchen shows the arrangement: a deep, curved copper canopy spans a tiled range alcove, with open shelves for pots below it. It is an excellent precedent for a modern statement hood. The curved profile, generous projection and alcove framing all translate to a wood or plaster-look hood cover with a modern ventilation insert.
