Panelling from the Presence Chamber, Hardwick Hall (measured drawing, 1903)

A measured drawing from Tanner's English Interior Woodwork of the panelled dado in the presence chamber at Hardwick Hall, the great Elizabethan house in Derbyshire.

Hardwick Hall, completed in the 1590s, is famous for its huge windows and its High Great Chamber. Tanner's plate documents the paneling that runs around the lower wall as a dado, with plaster decoration above. The drawing gives panel sizes and moulding profiles, which makes it a practical template for a Tudor-style wainscot today. A dado-height version is more affordable than full-height paneling and still carries the period look.
