Dining Room Chimneypiece, Hatfield House (photographed 1904)
Charles Latham's 1904 photograph of the dining room chimneypiece at Hatfield House, a tall Jacobean fireplace surround with columns, strapwork and an overmantel.
Jacobean chimneypieces typically rose in two stages: a fireplace surround with columns or pilasters, and a taller overmantel with niches, carved strapwork or heraldry above. This example at Hatfield shows the type. For a Tudor Revival living room, a two-stage chimneypiece in oak is the most powerful single element you can add. Simplified versions, with plain panels in place of carving, can still capture the silhouette.
Two-stage oak chimneypiece with columns, strapwork panels and overmantel; Heirloom tier, simplified Signature version available.
A custom version typically runs $5,000–$15,000+ per mantel, shipped.
