Chimneypiece in the Ballroom, Knole House (published 1894)
A plate from J. Alfred Gotch's Architecture of the Renaissance in England (1894) showing the chimneypiece in the ballroom at Knole, Kent, an outstanding early 17th-century interior.
Knole is one of the largest houses in England, and its early 17th-century state rooms are full of carved and painted woodwork. The ballroom chimneypiece shown here combines stone and carved detail in the Renaissance manner, with classical orders and dense ornament. Gotch's books, illustrated with photographs, were standard references for architects of the Tudor and Jacobean Revivals.
Carved overmantel and surround interpreted in oak or paint-grade wood with CNC-carved ornament; Heirloom tier.
A custom version typically runs $5,000–$15,000+ per mantel, shipped.
