Old Kitchen with China Hutch and Hearth, Telfair House, Savannah (1890)
An 1890 photograph of the old kitchen in the Telfair house in Savannah, Georgia, with a large cooking fireplace, a china hutch filled with plates and a spinning wheel.
This photograph, now in the Library of Congress, records a working kitchen of the 19th century: a wide hearth with hanging pots and utensils, a tall open hutch lined with plates, and simple wooden furniture on a stone floor. The arrangement is the same one found in English farmhouses and cottages, which is why we place it here. A plate hutch beside a hearth-like range alcove remains the core of a country kitchen.
Open plate hutch and a range alcove surround with a beam shelf; Essential tier.
A custom version typically runs $450–$650 per linear foot, installed in Colorado.
