Housekeeper's Room Dresser, Copped Hall, Essex

A large painted dresser in the housekeeper's room at Copped Hall near Epping, Essex, with open shelves of blue-and-white china above drawers and cupboards.

Large country houses had service rooms fitted with built-in dressers for china and linens. This one fills a wall, with open shelves of blue-and-white ware, a row of drawers and cupboards below, all painted. It shows how a dresser can scale up to become a storage wall. For a modern kitchen or butler's pantry, a wall-length dresser with open shelves is a strong alternative to rows of upper cabinets.
