Metal Screen and Stair, U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, Alexandria, Louisiana

A lobby view in the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Alexandria, Louisiana, showing a decorative metal screen beside the stairway, photographed by Carol M. Highsmith.

Decorative metal screens were used in Deco lobbies to separate spaces while keeping them open to light and view. This screen uses a repeating geometric pattern of verticals and stylized motifs. It is a good template for a room divider, stair screen or radiator cover, where a pierced pattern is needed that reads clearly from a distance.
