Stickley Living Room with Simple Woodwork Framing the Walls (1909)
An illustration from Craftsman Homes of a living room corner where plain oak strips divide the walls into panels and a broad plate rail ties the room together.
Not every Craftsman room had full paneling. This plate shows a simpler approach: flat oak boards outline the walls in a grid, a shelf or plate rail runs at door-head height, and windows are trimmed with the same plain stock. The effect is calm and structured. It is one of the most affordable ways to bring Arts and Crafts character into a new or remodeled house.
Board-and-batten style wall framing with a plate rail in oak or paint-grade poplar; Essential tier.
A custom version typically runs $18–$32 per sq ft of wall, shipped as a kit.
