Stickley Fireside Nook with Built-in Seats (1909)

A plate from Stickley's Craftsman Homes showing a fireside nook in a living room, with built-in benches on either side of a tiled fireplace under a low ceiling.

The inglenook, a seat built beside or around a fireplace, was one of the signature features of Arts and Crafts houses on both sides of the Atlantic. In this Stickley design, high-backed benches face each other across the hearth, with casement windows above, creating a small room within the room. Inglenooks are as appealing now as they were in 1909: a warm, enclosed place to sit, with storage under the seats.
