Elevator Door, First-Floor Lobby, Appraisers Building, San Francisco

A decorated metal elevator door in the first-floor lobby of the Appraisers Building in San Francisco, photographed by Carol M. Highsmith.

Elevator doors were one of the main canvases for ornament in Art Deco and Moderne buildings. This door combines a strong frame with a patterned panel, showing how a simple slab door can become a feature through a geometric design. In a home, the same approach can turn a pantry, closet or powder-room door into a focal point.
